[At end of open letter discouraging the town from allowing
Loyalists to come to town:] When I was a young man I read a
poem entitled The Art of Politics, in which there is a
sentiment that struck me . . . [3 lines] A member of the
British Parliament addresses the Speaker in some such manner
as this,
I hear a lion in the lobby roar,
Say, Mr. Speaker, shall I shut the door,
And keep him out; or shall I let him in,
That we may have to turn him out again.
Keep the lions out my fellow-citizens! Keep the lions out!
[signed] An Old Whig. Newport, April 30th, 1783.
